Be Wise, Eat Smart

Food & DrinkIt's amazing to think peanut butter sandwiches are now banned from most childcare facilities in the world due to the number of food allergies – one in 20 children and one in 100 adults have them.

Severe allergies cause life-threatening anaphylaxis – trouble breathing, dizziness or loss of blood pressure. If you're allergic, have an action strategy, carry medication and be vigilant. Here are some strategies for eating out.

Step 1 - Be Wise, Eat Smart

Know your allergen's names and derivatives so you can tell if it's hidden in a sauce or dressing. Ask for it to be left out.

Step 2 - Be Wise, Eat Smart

Choose restaurants carefully. Big chain restaurants are less likely yo cook a meal differently every time.

Step 3 - Be Wise, Eat Smart

Phone ahead and mention your allergy to confirm that the kitchen staff can accommodate your needs.

Step 4 - Be Wise, Eat Smart

On arrival, let the waiting staff know you have an allergy so they're aware of your requirements when if comes to ordering.
