If you find yourself suffering often from migraine headaches, especially when you're under a lot of stress at work, and wonder what causes these migraine headaches and try to find a way to prevent them.First, migraines are painful headaches often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light. The exact causes are still unknown, although they are related to changes in the brain as well as to genetic causes. Migraine triggers include fatigue, bright lights, weather changes, certain foods and alcohol. In fact, migraines have a tendency to run in families.
To manage your migraines, you need to know what triggers them off, says our medical expert.
Emotional stress is one of the most common triggers, which is probably why you experience them often at work when you're under a lot of pressure.
Emotions brought on by stress can increase muscle tension and dilate blood vessels, making your migraine more severe.
If you're at work when one occurs, find a quiet darkened room to rest in for a while. Take analgesics like Paracetamol or Naprosyn, or specific anti-migraine medication such as Imigran, Zomig or Naramig. It's best to consult a doctor before you take specific anti-migraine medication.
Find time to do exercise regularly. This will help you de-stress and hopefully prevent or lessen the frequency and severity of your migraines.
Migraine sufferers also seem to have fewer attacks when they eat regularly and get adequate rest. And not forget, see a doctor if your migraines happen more than once in two weeks...
