Thai garlands, or Malai as they are known locally, are the first indication that you arrived in a country like no other. These intricately strung white jasmine, which can also be threaded with the colorful petals of roses, marigold and orchids, garland can take on different shapes, they can either be circular to resemble a necklace or bracelet ending with two or more ends of flower ribbons, are part of the warm Thai welcome for visitors.They also play a prominent role in Thailand's local life. These floral rings are said to symbolize the beauty of Buddha's teachings and, because they are short-lived, the impermanence of live itself. Fragrant versions of the Malai are hung from rear view mirrors, mainly as an offering for safe journey, do taxi's smell like a flower garden in spring.
Yet the string of flowers also figure as offerings at a shrine for the resident spirit, for Buddhist altars in a home, on social occasions such as moving into a new house, at wedding engagements and even simply when attending a party.
In these ways and many more, the garlands are genuine reminder of all things Thai.
