The danger of Bangkok Taxis

Hopping into a cab late at night often seems safer than walking or taking public transport. But think about it: once you've gotten into someone's car, you're at their mercy. Some of the most ordinary activities can provide the perfect set-up for predators. Especially with the December month, with lots of teenagers cruising the streets for Western New Year celebrations.
Earlier this year, there was a spate of alleged sexual assaults on women by taxi drivers in Bangkok Rama 2 Rd. area. Almost all the victims were twenty-something, many were drunk and most of the attacks happened at night.
Then there are the reports of assault by "fake cabbies" unlicensed drivers who cruise night spots offering cheap fares "no meter" to drunken revelers who don't notice, or care, if the driver is unauthorized.
Bangkok licensed cabs always have the driver's photo and ID number on display at the left side of the dashboard, so look for these before you get in. "And sit in back left-hand seat", it is also a good idea to call or send by text message the taxi license plate, I advice calling and speaking out loud so that the taxi driver knows that somebody out there is aware who he is.
And not get me wrong, not all taxi drivers are bad. Just play it safe and explain the driver that you are a bit scared.
